This is the website of the David Border Consultancy.

David Border is a consultant microbiologist with more than 35 years’ experience in microbiological technologies such as anaerobic digestion, microalgae cultivation, and commercial composting.

In this website we will discuss new developments in that important section of biology - microbiology - as well as providing a background on the algae, bacteria and fungi involved. In particular, we will look at the important role that microbiology plays in protecting the environment - limiting climate change - by processing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane.

About David Border Consultancy

David Border Consultancy has worked with many commercial companies, Government departments, and Universities over the last 30-plus years on a variety of microbiology-based technologies.
Projects and clients of David Border Consultancy

We have experience in many aspects of anaerobic digestion, microalgae and commercial-scale composting, including the assessment and comparison of technologies and industry analysis.
Capabilities of David Border Consultancy

David Border has published technical articles, and given presentations, on many aspects of commercial microbiology. Here are some of them.

The amount of information published on these technologies each day is overwhelming, much of it related to environmental concerns. In this section I write articles - some short, some long and detailed - about what I consider to be important developments in the industry. We can also produce technical summaries of progress in each area.

Books and microscopes for the study of microbiology-based technologies

There are many books available in physical or digital format that cover every aspect of commercial microbiology and light- and electron-microscopy. This section includes a carefully selected list.

For those who have or want a hands-on relationship with microbiology there are many light microscopes and ancillary equipment available that are suitable for all types of microscopy. This section covers a range from the general to the specialist.

Major topics in the developing microbiology industry

Major topics
New large-scale applications of microbiology are coming on stream that could have a major effect on the environment. Here we look at a few of them.

Microalgae and climate change

Microalgae, carbon dioxide and global warming.
Microalgae are playing an increasingly important role in turning greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into valuable products. This avoids their release into the environment where they can contribute to global warming.

Bacteria and biodegradable plastics

Bacteria, methane and biodegradable plastics
another greenhouse gas, can now be converted by bacteria into biodegradable plastics.

Microorganisms and their commercial uses

Microorganisms and their commercial uses
Microalgae such as Chlorella and Spirulina, macroalgae (seaweeds) such as Laminaria and Gracilaria, fungi such as Agaricus and Saccharomyces, and bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Acetobacter, are employed in many different industries. They are used to treat pollution, to make food, feed, and hundreds of other valuable products, and to generate electricity and agricultural composts from recycled organic wastes. In this section we take a look at some of the most important applications.

Biology in Action - a blog on aspects of wider biology

Read new articles on broader aspects of biology
My interests extend way beyond microbiology into other areas of biology. These blogs describe some of the many fascinating organisms small and large.
