Algae of Australia: Marine Benthic Algae of North-western Australia (Aquatic Science)

Marine plants, or seaweeds, are unjustly perceived as one of the least charismatic groups of marine organisms. In truth they include many spectacular and attractive species; moreover, they comprise a vital component of coastal ecosystems, providing food and shelter for marine animals as well as contributing significantly to regional biodiversity. For over a decade, Dr John Huisman, in collaboration with students and colleagues, has collected and studied the marine plants of Australia’s vast and remote north-west coast, these activities uncovering numerous undescribed genera and species and resulting in a manifold increase in the known flora. His accounts of the marine algae are presented in two volumes of the Algae of Australia series; this part, describing the red algae, follows an earlier volume (2015) describing the green and brown algae.

Although not as conspicuous as the larger brown algae, the red algae are typically more diverse, with the number of species in any location more than twice that of the green and brown algae combined. This volume is an authoritative floristic account of the marine red algae of north-western Australia and includes 158 genera and 351 species, with 7 genera and 88 species newly described.

Each taxonomic level, from division to species, is fully described, incorporating current nomenclature, morphology, keys, and numerous figures, many in color. These two volumes represent the first detailed accounts of the marine plants of tropical Western Australia and document numerous taxa newly recorded for the region.

Anna Atkins: Photographs of British Algæ: Cyanotype Impressions (Sir John Herschel’s Copy)

Shortly after William Henry Fox Talbot announced his invention of photography in 1839, the amateur botanist Anna Atkins (1799–1871), daughter of a prominent British scientist, began to experiment with the medium. In 1843 she turned to her friend Sir John Herschel's recently discovered cyanotype process to publish her collection of native seaweeds. Over the next decade, Atkins printed and issued these bracingly modern photograms to her "botanical friends" in the form of hand-stitched fascicles.

The first book to be illustrated by photography and the earliest sustained application of photography to science, British Algæ is a landmark in publishing and photography. Of the nearly two dozen substantially complete or partial copies known to exist, each is distinct in its appearance and often in its number and arrangement of plates. The set of 13 parts she gave to Herschel―now in the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library―is especially important and was carefully preserved by generations of the Herschel family. This sumptuous facsimile edition reproduces the recto and verso of each plate, presenting the work as its creator intended.

Plankton Algae of Southeast Asia

This book is a taxonomic report on Plankton Algae found in samples collected from Southeast Asia covering Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. A total number of 670 taxa containing 66 taxa of Cyanophyceae, 26 taxa of Chrysophyceae, 27 taxa of Xanthophyceae, 8 taxa of Dinophyceae, 316 taxa of Euglenophyceae and 227 taxa of Chlorophyceae, has been described in the book along with photomicrograph and figures of each alga. In the algal group of Euglenophyceae, 10 taxa of Euglena, 28 taxa of Lepocinclis, 75 taxa of Phacus, 47 taxa of Strombomonas and 127 taxa of Trachelomonas have been found in polluted water, ponds or road side ditches of the area. The diversity of euglenaceous algae in the area has shown a relative connection with the distribution in Australia (Playfair, 1915, 1921), in Taiwan (Yamagishi, 1992), in China (Shi, 1999) and Japan (Yamagishi, 1984-1998).
